On July 28, memorial events were held in Brest. Exactly 77 years ago the regional capital was liberated from the Nazi invaders. This date is one of the rare moments when the war-time banner of the Brest Fortress is carried through the citadel This year the celebrations have a historical highlight. A mural to Major Gavrilov was unveiled in the city. A huge portrait of the defender of the fortress appeared in the street named after him. The height of the image is about the same as a ten-story building. It took 150 cans of special durable-formula paint to complete the picture. Artists worked 12 hours a day to finalize the piece ahead of the celebrations.
